Birmingham Brunching

Yesterday, the mister and I took the morning off to enjoy a sun drenched brunch at Social Kitchen in Birmingham while the weather held up.

Birmingham is a lovely little suburb in the metro area with a walkable downtown, and a little forested park right in the city centre. Social Kitchen is right smack in the centre of it all, near the intersection of Old Woodward and Maple with a cheery blue facade.

We came to Social Kitchen hunting for the waffles, said to be some of the best in the state.

The appetizers here are huge, and the entrees even bigger. Whenever I come here, I usually order an appetizer to myself and am totally full at the end.

I also love going to Social Kitchen on sunny days because of their year-round outdoor seating. During the winter months, they enclose the patio a bit and turn on the heaters so that you can still enjoy the sunshine when it does decide to make an appearance.

We grabbed our sunny table and poured over the menu, but this time, neither of us could resist the iconic Chicken & Waffles.

They may look simple, but they’re truly exquisite. A fair serving of lightly fried chicken poppers atop their famous golden waffles, drenched in bacon infused Michigan maple syrup and topped with even more bacon.

Heavenly doesn’t even begin to describe it.

Our next dish came out just as we finished licking the last drops of maple syrup off the plate.

Social Kitchen’s Shrimp and Grits is served southern style, bathed in a spicy cajun rub and topped with sautéed greens.

This is one of my favourite dishes here, and I love that it comes served in its own baby skillet. It’s technically not on the menu during the week, but if you ask nicely and aren’t in a rush the chef will happily prepare it for you.

While Social Kitchen is renowned for their brunches, they do fantastic meals any time of the day, served up in a swanky setting with Motown crooning through the speakers.

They’ve also got a fantastically stocked bar, making it a great place to grab a few drinks late at night, and perhaps split a waffle or two alongside your cocktails.

The forecast is looking pretty gloomy for the time being, but head over the next time it’s sunny and let me know what you think!
